The Fomenko Portfolio by Andrei Kovalev: the theatre's cast and crew line up for a black-and-white group portrait, each holding a prop.

The Fomenko Portfolio

In October–November 2018, the Pyotr Fomenko Workshop, one of Moscow’s most acclaimed theatres, asked me to photograph its whole cast and creative crew, its Artistic Director and its CEO.

My team and I made 89 shoots in 21 days: a set of 224 portraits.

At the core of the project is a collaboration between artist and subject. To make the series more varied and draw the viewer in, I came up with a game. Each actor chose an object from more than 100 random theatre props, then played the character who owns it. Each improvisation is a one-off play: it happened once, and lives on only in a few frames.

In January 2019, the theatre showed 64 of the portraits in a large exhibition in its own exhibition space.

The project is a collaboration with Broncolor and Sinar.
